Exhibition "Modalities" | March 30, 15:00

Place: Central Department Store (TSUM), 2nd floor 

Exhibition is open till April 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Gender – social sex of people, obtained at the very beginning of their lives – in delivery rooms boys and girls are wrapped into tissues of different colors, when they are small, boys are encouraged to play 'Soldiers' and dream of becoming firemen whereas girls are supposed to play 'moms' and create their small houses with toy household, and dream of becoming nurses, seamstresses and brides. When they are older, social experience further segregates them into men and women, into breadwinners and hearth keepers which plays a decisive role in men’s and women's obtaining statuses and a societal positions. 

This situation is aggravated in post-Soviet Central Asia by religious and social prejudices as well as lack of knowledge of all aspects of this problem as well as by lack of "gender education", in the result of which public believes that gender is an exclusively women’s problem and they have to face it all alone. 

The term "Modalities" borrowed from linguistics, meaning necessity and must, was reinterpreted by artists into artworks of various contemporary arts, united by a single goal – to raise awareness among public on various aspects of gender issue and attract attention to its various manifestations, as well as, by means of arts, to find out how fairly different modal verbs were cast between "Male and Female Natures".
